But George knew what had happened. A haint had caused the fire! He had heard unexplainable scratching and shuffling on many occasions, including shortly before the fire had begun. Remembering these disturbances, he became convinced that some dratted haint had slipped into the cabin through the front door’s tiny keyhole, but had been unable to get out without great difficulty. Like a cat that easily climbs a tree but has trouble getting down from it, it is much easier for a haint to enter a place than to exit. So, as payback for her troubles, the evil spirit had breathed her hot, foul breath as hard as she could into the dying fire, causing flames to rekindle and leap out of the fireplace. The wood structure had surrendered to the hearty fire in no time.

When he built his next home, George kept this experience in mind and altered the design of his house accordingly. For one thing, he used brick, not wood. Also, he incorporated a large keyhole into the front of the house. The odd shape was on the upper part of the brick house, near the master bedroom. No one knows whether it was thanks to these precautions or his moving out of the dense woods where evil spirits were plentiful, but George Powell never again had a problem with haints.

The house he built at 901 Seehorn Street in Lenoir, North Carolina—known as Keyhole House—was eventually torn down and replaced by Trinity United Methodist Church. Before the house was destroyed, however, the keyhole was removed and saved. The bricked-up keyhole can be seen on the sign at the entrance of the old church.

It’s important to keep in mind that haints aren’t limited to the Lowcountry. They can be found all over the world, wherever forests, swamps, and graveyards are found.
